There's a new Malaysian restaurant in San Mateo, on El Camino near 25th
Street, where the banh mi place is or used to be. Has anyone tried it? It
looks busy, but alas I haven't been by there at meal times.

It's a couple of doors North of the banh mi place... I haven't tried it
yet because it seems to be in the same building as that Vietnamese
place. It was my understanding that that Vietnamese place was closed
down by the Health Dept a while ago and I don't think it's re-opened yet
(if it ever will, I don't know).

To clarify: I drive by this location quite often, and have not ever
seen it closed. The chinese restaurant next door, though, was closed
for a short time and then reopened before it closed permanently.

They stripped the place down to the studs to build this new restaurant.

From http://www.decadeonline.com/insp.phtml?agency=smc&record_id=PR0000898
they were closed down back in September. I guess, since there have been
several inspections since then that they might be open again but I don't
know. This is the Vietnamese place a few doors South of the new
Malaysian place.

Can't wait to try it.

Penang Garden, according to their menu, but Penang Garden II according
to the "grand opening banner" that had been hanging there for a couple
of months.

We went tonight. The bottom line is, quite food and worth repeat trips.

There were four of us: one unadventurous eating nine-year-old, one
mostly vegetarian and two total omnivors.

We started Roti Canai and the chicken satay (for the 9-year-old).
We then got Mango Chicken, Belachan String Beans, Sizzling Bean Curd,
Nasi Lemak, and some additional rice (some plain, some coconut).

We also had a juice of young coconut (served in the coconut) and
a lychee drink.

Everything was good, some of the stuff (mango chicken, green beans)
were excellent. We're definitely coming back. The only item that
was disappointing was the chicken satay but it was only ordered to
give the sauce-disliking 9-year-old somethign to eat with her plain
rice.

There was definitely way too much food for us and much of the
mango chicken will be a lunch for someone tomorrow (hopefully me!)
The bill was about $70 including tax and tip. Basically all the
entrees are in the $8-$11 range, except for the crabs which are $23.
We'll probably try one of those next time.
